Captivating and amazing flute tones make the music of this duo an extraordinary listening experience. With bass, alto and piccolo flutes as well as glissando head pieces a wide sound register is presented. Robert Dick and Ulrike Lentz create multi-layered sound worlds with multiple sounds, whisteltones, percussive elements and lyrical playing that fascinate in a special way.
The CD "ARE THERE?" was recorded in concert in Kassel and was released in 2018 by Mulatta Records New York. "Are there?" is a program of radiantly colorful, powerful and emotional improvisations by two real flute originals, Robert Dick and Ulrike Lentz.
Ulrike Lentz is regarded internationally as a specialist for extended, contemporary playing techniques and free improvisation on the flute and has developed her own musical language. Robert Dick revolutionized the technique of flute back in the '70s, and was honored by the 2014 National Flute Association in Chicago with the "Lifetime Achievement Award" for his flute work.

More flute is not possible! Ulrike Lentz explores which sounds can be drawn from a flute. Robert Dick does the same, using multiphonics, or the “glissando flute”, spreading the spectrum of the spectrum of the flute’s sound, including venturing far into the noise zone. “Are There” is a back and forth conversation at eye, or better, ear height. Recorded in concert, this isn’t music wearing a party dress, but rather calls for you to get involved in. Focused listening is rewarded, as the sounds develop over time. (…) Lentz and Dick get the most out of their instruments: singing, focusing on key percussion, indeed any and everything with which the sound of the flute can modified. Interesting project!

Featuring Robert Dick on piccolo, alto & bass flutes & flute with Glissando Headjoint and Ulrike Lentz on piccolo, flutes & flute-tubes. Downtown flute virtuoso, Robert Dick, has played in many duos: Mari Kimura (violin), Ursel Schlicht (piano), Tiffany Chang (drums) and Nicola Hein (electric guitar). I hadn’t heard of Ms. Ulrike Lentz before Mr. Dick left us with this disc but it turns out that she has been around and worked with many great musicians: Matthias Schubert, Xu Fengxia, Hans Tammen & many others. It turns out that she is also a flute virtuoso. Listening to this disc, I was struck by the diversity of sounds created by two flutists. Both Mr. Dick and Ms. Lentz switch between a half dozen different flutes, hence their sounds are always changing, their explorations restless. The Glissando Headjoint flute was designed by Robert Dick and allows the flutist to bend notes in a unique way. Both flutists here selectively use this unique flute to produce odd bends and shifts in their notes. The outcome is much diverse and dynamic than many would imagine. Einnehmende und verblüffende Flötentöne machen die Musik dieses Duos zu einem außergewöhnlichen Hörerlebnis. Mit Bass-, Alt- und Piccoloquerflöten sowie Glissandokopfstücken präsentiert sich ein breites Klangregister. Robert Dick und Ulrike Lentz schaffen mit Mehrfachklängen, Whisteltones, perkussiven Elementen und lyrischem Spiel vielschichtige neue Klangwelten, die auf besondere Weise faszinieren.
Die CD „ARE THERE?“ wurde im Konzert in Kassel aufgenommen und ist 2018 bei Mulatta Records New York erschienen. "Are There?" ist ein Programm von kraftvollen und emotionalen Improvisationen von zwei echten Flötenoriginalen, Robert Dick und Ulrike Lentz.
Ulrike Lentz gilt international als Spezialistin für erweiterte, zeitgenössische Spieltechniken und freie Improvisation auf der Querflöte und hat eine eigene Klangsprache entwickelt. Robert Dick hat bereits in den 70ern die Spieltechnik der Querflöte revolutioniert und wurde 2014 von der von der National Flute Association in Chicago mit dem „Lifetime Achievement Award“ für sein flötistisches Lebenswerk ausgezeichnet.

Mehr Flöte geht nicht! Ulrike Lentz erforscht, welche Klänge der Flöte zu entlocken sind. Robert Dick macht dasselbe, setzt dabei Multiphonics oder die Glissandoflöte ein und spreizt das Spektrum der Flöte weit ins Geräuschhafte. „ Are There? “ ist eine Art Zwiegespräch, eine Unterhaltung auf Augen- oder hier besser Ohrenhöhe. “ Das mitgeschnittene Konzert ist keine leichte Kost, sondern Musik auf die man sich einlassen muss. Man muss Geduld mitbringen für die Klänge, die sich langsam entwickeln. (…) Lentz und Dick holen das Letzte aus ihren Instrumenten: durch singen, schreien, den Fokus auf Klappengeräusche und allem, womit der Ton der Querflöte akustisch modifiziert werden kann. Interessantes Projekt!
